Commercial Air Conditioning Types and Options

Some people are at a loss when it comes to selecting the right type of air conditioning system for their business. Some common questions are:

  • Should I get a split type system for areas like the boardroom?
  • Can a central air conditioning system cool very large rooms?
  • Are window air conditioners still available and should we consider them for commercial use?
  • Which type of solution is the most energy efficient, and which is the best value?

The fact is that different businesses have different needs and as a result, require different types of air conditioning units. There are a few considerations to note before buying an AC system for your office or commercial space, including the size of the area that needs to be cooled, how much heat is generated in the area and how efficient is the system you are considering to cool this area.

As you work through these details, here are some of the most common types of commercial AC units you’ll want to consider before making a final decision:

Window Air Conditioner

This is the most popular type of unit for cooling small rooms. It is shaped like a box and is usually sized to fit in a window inside the room.

Central Air Conditioning System

If you are planning to cool very large rooms, then a commercial central air conditioning system is the best option. These systems are great for cooling large floor areas such as factories, cinemas, gyms, convention centers, malls, public libraries, and museums.  For these types of establishments, central air conditioning systems are more energy efficient and less costly than other options.  A central air conditioning system utilizes a large compressor that can create massive amounts of cooling power.

Split Air Conditioner

The split-type air conditioner has two separate units: indoor and outdoor. The indoor unit houses the cooling fan and the cooling coil. Parts like the expansion valve, compressor and condenser are found in the outdoor unitlocated outside the room that’s being cooled. Unlike window air conditioners, these commercial AC units do not require a window or hole in the wall for installation. A split air conditioner can cool one or two rooms, depending on the size of the rooms, they  are less noticeable and take up less space.

Packaged Air Conditioner.

These units are commonly used in places like restaurants, small halls, and offices. Packaged air conditioners may have either water cooled or air cooled condensers. For AC units with water cooled condensers, water must be continuously supplied to keep it functioning. The advantage of an air cooled condenser unit is that you never have to worry about having continuous water flow and as long as the area is well ventilated you can rely on its continuous functionality.

Solar Air Conditioning

Solar thermal air conditioning units reduce the amount of power required to run your AC unit by as much as 40%. By adding a solar panel like the units made by Suntrac Solar Manufacturing your AC unit will require less power and thus significantly reduce your energy bill each month.  For businesses looking to “go green” or cut down on electric bills, a solar air conditioning system is often the most viable option.
